“Welcome to my online hand-weaving studio. Here I will share within my journal my latest weaving experiments, collaborations and projects. My gallery filled with my favourite images of the process & finished work; and my shop will be updated seasonally with a small collection of works for sale. Below is a little more about me and my weaving journey . . . “
I am a handweaver, spinner and natural dyer. Weaving has ignited my creativity from the first moment that it fell into my lap by chance: as a simple crude cardboard loom, a bundle of colourful wool & a large needle. Ever since then I have wanted to explore all forms of this vast and expansive medium. I am drawn to explore the most ancient weaving technologies & techniques, myself and my husband Tobias Aisbitt-Waugh work together to create our own looms using archeological sources to design them.
My weaving studio is set on our thousand year old rural Dartmoor smallholding. I am everyday inspired by the dramatic beauty of the high granite tors and vast swathes of moorland that surround our family home. Sheep graze all around us, the creators of the material that I source for most of my weaving. I love to use local Dartmoor Whiteface fleeces in my weaving projects, deepening my connection to the land that we live within.
Growing and experimenting with natural dyes is another significant part of my practice. I have created a natural dye garden on our land, experimenting with growing native dye plants as well as foraging wild ones from the hedgerows. I see this as a way of becoming extremely intimate with the cloth that I create, impregnated with the color of the Dartmoor seasons.
My practice spans many forms of woven textiles: shawls, tapestries, rugs, archeological reconstruction cloth & tablet woven belts. The beauty of each of these types of weaving is that they take a different loom, a different physical approach and a slightly different skill to create. My work dances within the freedom that these differing textiles command. Yet, the core of my practice is one of instinct and vision. With every piece I weave, I tap into my inner visionary landscape and draw fourth the colors, textures and shapes that are yearning to spring up & onto the loom. This has always been the way I have created cloth. With every weave I am becoming a more dedicated student of the path of visionary artist & visionary weaver. I am completely self taught yet I know that within my bones, in that mysterious deep well of knowledge that spans lifetimes, weaving was waiting as a shining gem for me to remember again in this life.
